An Ibadan Chief Magistrates’ Court at Iwo Road, on Friday, sentenced a 24-year-old Paul Olaitan to four years in a correctional centre, for burglary and stealing home appliances.
The convict, of unknown address, had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Taiwo Oladiran, ruled that the convict is sentenced to two years in the correctional centre for count one charge of burglary with no option of fine.
“The convict is hereby sentenced to two years imprisonment at the Agodi Correctional Centre on a two-count charge of stealing plasma television, with no option of fine.
“He is to serve with hard labour, to serve as a deterrent to others,’’ Oladiran said.
The Magistrate, however, said that the convict should serve the term concurrently, meaning that he would spend two years at the custodial centre.
Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Sunday Ogunremi, told the court that the convict had on Aug. 2, by 2.00 p.m. at Ogo-Oluwa Street, Iyana Agbala, Ibadan, broke into the apartment of one Gbenga Ajadi.
“The convict entered into Ajadi’s apartment on a Sunday afternoon.
“Ajadi met the convict in his room after reaching home from Church; so, he raised the alarm.
“The convict tried to jump over the fence, but was chased and caught with the stolen properties by neighbours,’’ said Ogunremi.
He said that the convict stole N85,000 cash from Ajadi’s room, one plasma television valued at N100,000 and a big bag, valued at N10,000.
Ogunremi said that the total sum of the stolen items was N195,000, adding that the offence contravened sections 390 (9) and 411 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II, Law of Oyo State 2000.
