No fewer than 14, 913 people have benefitted from free eye services offered under the “Ganduje Foundation’s Eye Treatment Scheme” in Kano State, Gov. Ganduje disclosed on Saturday, at Dawakin-Tofa local government area.
Ganduje, who stated this at the closing of the scheme, added that the exercise was conducted in all the five emirate councils of the state ”as every second Thursday of October, each year, is set aside and regarded as World Sight Day.
“Before today’s closing ceremony, the exercise was declared open at the Murtala Muhammad Specialists’ Hospital, Kano, with the treatment of 4,306 people from Kano emirate.
“2,904 people were treated in Bichi emirate, in Gaya, 2,536 people were treated, Karaye, 2,426 people, and 2,741 people in Rano emirate council,” he said.
He commended all the health workers who participated to the end of the exercise, advising the people to always heed the advice of health experts on their healthcare issues.
The governor also said that his administration would establish an eye clinic in each of the 44 local government headquarters for effective eye healthcare services.
“Kano state government sets to establish Eye Clinic in the headquarters of all the 44 local governments across the state. The government will strengthen the institutions and ensure adequate staffing for effective service delivery”, he said.
In his remarks, the representative of Sight Boost, Dr. Kamilu Sale, acknowledged and appreciated the governor’s concern for people’s eyes, while disclosing that since 2014, the Ganduje Foundation had ”treated over 380,000 people with eye problems.”
Sale gave the breakdown as: “264, 000 were diagnosed and provided with prescriptions and 105, 600 were provided with eye glasses, while trachoma surgeries were conducted on the remaining ones.”
One of the beneficiaries interviewed, Abdullahi Muhammad, expressed appreciation and commended the governor for the free eye treatment.
