The Islamic Promotion Initiative of Nigeria, a faith-based NGO, on Saturday in Abuja pledged to develop Quranic recitation skills in non-Arabic public and private secondary schools in the FCT.
Chairman of the initiative, Dr Muhammad Adam, made the pledge at the 10th edition of a Qur’an recitation competition, organised by the NGO in partnership with the Initiative for Muslim Women in Nigeria.
“We are conducting Qur’an recitation competition for girls in all public and private secondary schools in the FCT, which are non-Arabic schools.
“The reason for that is that Arabic-based schools have Qur’an recitation in their schools curricula, so they don’t have a problem.
“In our public schools, the level of recitation is very low, so we find it very encouraging to invite them to compete among themselves.
“At the end of the day they will become fluent in reciting the Holy Quran and they will not be left behind.
“These days we need Qur’an in our lives and we observe that girls in secondary schools that are not Arabic based find it difficult to memorise the Qur’an, but with this effort they will learn and master Qur’an recitation,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 30 female students drawn from public and private secondary schools in the six Area Councils of the FCT would participate in the three-day Qur’an recitation competition.
According to Adam, it is very important for all Muslims to learn to recite the Holy Qur’an, especially now that social decadence abounded in the society.
He emphasised the need for children both male and female to learn the Quran because it is guidance.
“With the current security challenges we are having now, we need the Quran in our lives,’’ he said.
Adam explained that winners were expected to emerge in each of the five categories of the competition.
He said one of the winners would represent the FCT at the upcoming national Qur’an recitation competition schedule to hold in Adamawa.
Adam, who is also an Imam at the Abuja National Mosque, said the competition was part of efforts to support the Centre for Qur’an Studies, Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto.
The cleric said that the programme, since inception 10 years ago, had helped to develop the skills of teaching the Qur’an in public schools.
