Rivers United attacking midfielder, Uche Onwuasonaya has been recently rewarded for his exploits in the Nigerian Professional Football League and CAF Champions League with a call up to the home based Super Eagles camp as the team prepares for an Invitational tourney in Congo under the tutelage of Austin Eguavoen and Paul Aigbogun.
The 22-year-old player helped Rivers United secure victories both home and away in their Champions League tie against perennial participants on the continent, Young Africans of Tanzania.
His relentless performance in midfield coupled with his eye-catching foot works and accurate passes rendered the defenders and midfielders of the opposition clueless as Stanley Eguma boys coasted to a 2-0 aggregate victory.
Renowned for his dribbling skills, the talent of Onwuasonaya who won the Man of the Match Award away to Simba SC of Tanzania while on the books of Plateau United has been likened to that of former Super Eagles captain, Austin Okocha.
Interestingly, the diminutive midfielder has already proven himself in Nigeria’s colours, he showed his tactical discipline in the middle of the park when Super Eagles’ home-based team locked horns with the El Tri of Mexico. Onwuasonaya was a mainstay in the Eagles midfield for 85 minutes before he was substituted.
As the Super Eagles continue their long search for the successor to Okocha in the centre circle, football enthusiasts continue to point in the direction of Onwuasonaya and a recent testament to this was his recent invitation to the home-based Super Eagles fold where he is expected to quickly show his potentials and possibly fill the big shoes of Okocha.
