A clerk, Stanley Uwadia, 27, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over an alleged theft of his employer’s goods worth N512, 500, and N98,700 in cash.
Uwadia was entrusted with the responsibility of receiving goods supplied his employer, putting details of the goods into the computer system and making sure that the warehouse manager signs the invoice that came with the goods.
He was, however, accused of converting the goods and some cash to personal use.
The defendant, a resident of Ilupeju, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The Prosecutor, ASP Kehinde Ajayi, told the court that Uwadia committed the offences between March and June at Afrione Company, Ikorodu road, Ilupeju, in Lagos State.
She alleged that the defendant stole 28 different phones and accessories worth N512,500 belonging to his employer, Afrione Company Limited.
Ajayi alleged that the defendant converted N98,700 being sales made and refused to remit the money into the company’s account.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 287(8) of the Criminal code, Law of Lagos State, 2015 which prescribes seven years imprisonment for stealing from one’s employer.
Magistrate A.O Ajibade admitted Uwadia to bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.
He said that the surety must be responsible and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Ajibade adjourned the case until Sept. 7, for mention.
