A Kano Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the state Commissioner of Police to conduct an investigation into the alleged threat to life and defamation of character levelled against one Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara.
The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Mustapha Sa’ad-Datti, gave the order upon hearing a motion exparte brought Abdulrahman Nasir, counsel to the applicant, Sheikh Abdallah Pakistan.
The respondents in the suit are Kabara and the state police commissioner.
The order, with number KA/CMC14/003/2021, ordered the Commissioner of Police to submit his findings to the court on or before March 27.
The court maintained that the order was pursuant to Order 9 Rule 8 of the Magistrates Court 2018.
Recall that on February 3, the Kano State government debarred the cleric from preaching, demolished his propagation center and deployed security agents around his residence.
But in a move toward solving the religious impasse raging between the Mr Kabara and other clerics, the governor announced on February 7 that a debate would be held in two weeks.
Days after the expiration of the two weeks, the state government fixed Sunday, March 7 for the much-awaited debate.
But in what appears to be a set back to the planned debate, the JNI, which a leading Islamic body in the country, in a statement by its secretary-general, Khalid Aliyu, said there was no need for a debate with a “blasphemer”.
A day to the debate, a magistrate court ordered that the debate be suspended until March 22 for determination.
