The Federal Government on Thursday flagged-off cash transfer to rural women/UNDP Unconditional Cash Transfer to vulnerable communities in Ebonyi State as part of efforts to checkmate poverty.
Mrs Sadiya Farouq, Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development inaugurated the cash transfer in Abakaliki.
The minister explained that the cash transfer was to empower vulnerable women.
Farouq urged the women to utilise the money and ensured that the federal government was ready to support women and ameliorate the harsh economy.
“The cash transfer is for all vulnerable women in Ebonyi and other states in the country. Here in Ebonyi, it cut across the 13 local government areas,”.
Mr Kelechi Igwe, Deputy Governor of Ebonyi said the gesture was a welcome development to encourage women to start business and make a living.
Igwe described Ebonyi women as very hardworking people and urged them to make the good use of the money.
“This is an investment stimulant for women. I urge the women to invest the money judiciously.
“We didn’t know that this kind of thing is happening since five years; We commend the federal government and our able Governor, David Umahi on his defecation to APC,” the Deputy Governor stated.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that each beneficiary from the 13 local government areas received N20,000 each.
Mrs Chidimma Nworie, a beneficiary said she was happy and thanked the federal government on the gesture.
