As condemnations continued to trail the call by the northern governors for social media censorship, the Arewa Youth Forum, AYF, says such might trigger a sort of interference on the use of social media by the Nigerian youth.
The group advised that those in authority should promote good governance and strengthen various institutions, rather than attempting to gag or restrict the free flow of news and information in this internet age.
According to the youth, in a statement signed by its National President,
Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu, and made available to newsmen on Thursday,
AYF appealed to the youth to explore other avenues of ventilating their grievances ant not through violent confrontation.
While also frowning at acts of vandalization and brigandage, and most importantly, support the weeding of bad eggs from the Nigerian Police and supported well remunerated for the good ones.
“The good ones should be subjected to regular training in order to work with decorum and compete favourably with their counterparts from across the world,” the statement reads.
Part of the statement reads: “we have watched with keen interest, the recent high powered meeting of Northern Governors ,emirs, ministers and other prominent figures of northern extraction in Kaduna.
“While the group is still looking at the resolutions of the meeting, with a view to coming up with our position ,we however would like to express gratitude to the President and Commander in Chief, Muhammadu Buhari ,who directed members of his cabinet to return to their respective constituencies and engage with the youth.
“This, undoubtedly, will gradually bridge the seeming disconnect which had brought doubt and uncertainty in the minds of many youth.
“While AYF appealed that such rapprochement be sustained and encouraged at all levels of government.
“AYF welcome the advocacy to find a constitutional role for our traditional rulers and commended the role they’ve been playing In the maintenance of law and order .
“AYF appealed to the youth to explore other avenues of ventilating their grievances ant not through violent confrontation,frowned at acts of vandalization and brigandage, and most importantly, support the weeding of bad eggs from the Nigerian Police while the good ones be supported ,be well remunerated and subjected to regular training in order to work with decorum and compete favourably with their counterparts from across the world.
“Relatedly, the AYF has conducted a survey and discovered over 20,000 widows and hundreds of orphans whose fathers were victim of pockets of crisis up North.
“AYF, however, called on the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives to reconsider his assertion of budget provision in 2021 for victims of EndSARS protest to also,,include those women and children in the North who have lost their bread winners.”
