A businesswoman, Peace Akpa, on Tuesday appeared in a Grade I Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, for allegedly defrauding a second-hand cloth seller of N165, 000.
The police charged Akpa of Arab Road, Kubwa, Abuja, with criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The Prosecution Counsel, Babajide Olanipekun told the court that the complainant, Philomena Ameh reported the matter at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Byazhin, Abuja on June 25.
Olanipekun said that the complainant sold a bale of fairly used clothes (Okrika) worth N165, 000 to the defendant on credit sometime in September 2016.
He alleged that the defendant refused to pay the money, four years after the deal.
The prosecution said during police investigation, only N20, 000 was recovered from the defendant till date.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 312 and 320 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.
The defence counsel, Taiye Okoya prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms, citing Section 162 and 158 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
The Judge, Mr Muhammad Adamu, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N150, 000 with one reasonable surety in like sum.
Adamu ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He also ordered that the surety must present means of identification and adjourned the case until Nov. 9 for hearing.
