Jimeta Leads Energy Transformation In Northern Nigeria As KEDCO Signs 10MW Solar Power Offtake Agreement

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has taken a historic step in Nigeria’s energy sector by commencing the offtake of 10 megawatts (MW) of clean solar power from the Haske Solar Plant, located in the Challawa Industrial Cluster, Kano, Kano State.
The milestone followed the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between KEDCO and Haske Solar Company Ltd, a project built by the federal government through the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and managed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).
The agreement signed in Abuja by KEDCO’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, and the Executive Director, Portfolio Management of MOFI, Mr Tajudeen Datti Ahmed, represents a significant step in integrating renewable energy into Nigeria’s power distribution framework.
The event was also witnessed by the Managing Director of Future Energies Africa (FEA), Engr Yusuf Usman Yahaya, KEDCO’s core investor.
Speaking on the development, Dr Jimeta described the partnership as a trailblazing move in strengthening energy security for Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States.
“This partnership is a major step forward in our commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable electricity to our customers. By integrating solar power into our supply mix, we are not only improving network efficiency but also contributing to Nigeria’s energy transition goals,” he said.
Dr Jimeta further explained that the energy is already being evacuated through KEDCO’s Abattoir Injection Substation and supplied to industrial customers within the cluster via NBC 11kV and Ceramic 11kV feeders. He stressed that the 10MW solar offtake is part of a broader energy diversification agenda aimed at safeguarding industries, creating jobs, and supporting socio-economic growth across the region.
Also commenting, Engr Yusuf Usman Yahaya, MD/CEO of Future Energies Africa (FEA), reaffirmed FEA’s commitment to transforming KEDCO.
“As KEDCO’s core investor, FEA is keenly committed to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States. Through innovative solutions and partnerships, we aim to lead the way in renewable energy adoption and sustainable development,” he stated.
With this milestone, KEDCO under the visionary leadership of Dr Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta is being celebrated as a trailblazer in renewable integration, setting an example for other electricity distribution companies in Nigeria. The Haske Solar Plant, commissioned in January 2023, remains the country’s largest grid-connected solar project, and its integration into KEDCO’s network is a bold testament to innovation, sustainability, and forward-thinking leadership.
KEDCO has commended the federal government, NSIA, MOFI, and the Kano State Government for their support in realising this state-of-the-art power facility.
The company also reaffirmed its commitment to further renewable energy investments as part of its Safe Grid Initiative, ensuring a stronger, cleaner, and more reliable electricity future for millions of customers.
