The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seems mustering the strength to root out the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections in Katsina State if the gale of defections hitting the governing party in President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state is anything to go by.
About 45,000 members of the APC defected to PDP from APC in three local government areas of the state alone over the last one week.
This comprised the about 15,000 who decamped in Malumfashi and Danja Local Government Areas of Katsina South Senatorial District (Funtua Zone) last week and the 19,500 who decamped in Baure Local Government Area on Saturday, 27th August.
A PDP stalwart in the state, Hamza Yunusa Jibiya, who is the former Northwest Youth Leader of the party, told Daylight Reporters on phone that due to the high rate of APC – PDP decampment across the state, receiving the decampees by the PDP has become a weekly affair.
He said the party has mandated all its local government areas chairmen to compile comprehensive lists of the decamped in their respective local areas preparatory to their reception.
The 19,500 Baure APC decampees were received into PDP by the party’s Katsina gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 elections, Yakubu Lado Danmarke; the state PDP Chairman, Salisu Yusuf Majigiri and the senator representing Daura Zone at the National Assembly, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita.
