Commercial Drivers Petition Police Over Multiple Taxation, Intimidation In Bayelsa
By Ebiowei Okiemo – Yenagoa
The Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria, Yenagoa chapter, has raised concerns over the imposition of double taxation on its members and is calling on government at all levels to intervene in addressing this issue.
The association, through a signed statement by its chairman, Mr. Igorki Major, directed the appeal to the State Government and the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16, accusing one Prince Oweibi and some individuals in military uniform of compelling its members to purchase tickets at Emiligo, Ayon, and Okolomadi–communities around Oruma in Ogbia Local Government Area
The association further highlighted similar challenges in Sagbama and Southern Ijaw Local Government areas of Bayelsa State, where certain individuals claim to be selling Local Government Operational Permit, Environmental Sanitation Stickers and tickets, despite the fact that its members already have duly approved Unified Stickers and Daily Tickets from the Bayelsa State Revenue Board.
The Drivers Welfare Association urged the State Government and security agencies to address these illegal operators in the interest of peace, while emphasizing their commitment to collaborate with government and non-governmental agencies to create a peaceful and secure atmosphere in the state.
The association reiterated its dedication to promoting and empowering its members, fostering unity, and ensuring compliance with rules and regulations in the transport sector and the broader society.
