Kannywood star actor, Adam Zango, has revealed that he is down with depression following his separation from his wife.
After several months of family rift, the marriage between the actor and his wife, Safiyya Umar Chalawa, ended in April 2023.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa, Zango opened up about his struggles, admitting to withdrawing from his daily activities and seeking self-reflection.
He spoke about facing numerous difficulties, including conflict with industry colleagues, family issues, and societal misinterpretations of his words.
These pressures, he admitted, led him to lose focus and struggle with mental health crisis.
He said, “I am one of those facing challenges in Kannywood, I suffered most. If hundreds of people in this industry can say something, nothing will happen, but if I utter a word, some people will start misinterpreting me.
“So these things forced me to stay away a little. I had problems with some producers and actors in the industry. I also have problem with my family. These challenges worsen my situation to the extent that I lost focus. I don’t even do or think rightly.
“So instead of me to come online or physically and be misbehaving while depressed, I chose to stay away to recover before bouncing back to continue my activities.
“You know depression is an illness itself which needs a doctor. I have a doctor who counsels me, and this, coupled with prayers from my mother, fans, and myself, helped greatly in my quick recovery.”
Asked about possible reconciliation with his enstranged wife, Zango said, “We still haven’t reconciled, I learnt that she is even about to get married.”
He also clarified his previous statement where he vowed not to remarry, explaining it was made in anger and he now acknowledged the need for another marriage to protect his dignity and that of his family.
“I have to get married to protect my dignity, that of my children and my mother, because now I am becoming a complete human being,” he said.
Zango mentioned social media as a key point of disconnection in his recent relationship, stating that he initially allowed his wife to use social media platforms for business purposes, but things took a turn for the worse.
He said his emphasis in future marriages would be considering a woman’s family background, drawing on lessons learned from his past experiences. super star, Adam Zango down with Depression
