NUJ South-south Council Tasks FGN On Roads, Security, Commends Rivers Govt, HYPREP

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), South-south zone of has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to urgently address the deplorable state of federal roads, highways, and other critical infrastructures, and strengthen security measures to safeguard lives and livelihoods in the region.
The demand was part of the resolutions reached at the Zone F Executive Council (ZEC) Meeting of the Union, which held from Wednesday 20th to Friday 22nd August, 2025 at the NUJ Complex, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The meeting was presided over by the Zonal Vice President, Comrade Opaka Dokubo.
The council, after extensive deliberations on issues affecting the South-south region, media industry and journalists’ welfare, commended the Rivers State government for maintaining peace and creating an enabling environment for lawful social and economic activities.
It further lauded the cordial relationship between the NUJ Rivers State Council and the state government.
Following a tour of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) in Ogoniland, the union also hailed HYPREP for its remediation efforts and livelihood restoration programmes, while urging the federal government to extend similar interventions to other oil-polluted communities across the Niger Delta.
On professionalism, the ZEC directed council chairmen and secretaries within the zone to revalidate the membership of journalists under their jurisdiction as part of measures to curb quackery in the profession.
The communiqué strongly condemned the indiscriminate use of NUJ’s name for unauthorized awards by individuals and groups, warning that offenders would henceforth face severe sanctions.
It stressed that any activity carried out under the insignia of the union must strictly conform with its constitution.
Other resolutions included congratulating the NUJ deputy national president, Comrade Ambimbola Oyetunde, on her elevation to Lagos State Bureau Chief of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), and commending state governors in the South-south for their support to NUJ councils in their domains.
The ZEC equally appreciated the national president of the union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, for appointing members from the zone into the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the NUJ.
The meeting ended with a charge to council leaders to ensure that members under their watch uphold the highest standards of professionalism, which, the communiqué emphasised, “remains the hallmark of excellent journalism practice.”
The session was successfully hosted by the Rivers State Council of the NUJ.
