The Russian President, Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump have met in Alaska on Friday to discuss possible ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to stop the ongoing war.
The meeting is still ongoing as expectations and speculations grew about the possible outcome of the much anticipated meeting.
However, as stakeholders, the Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European Union (EU) were not involved or invited in the meeting.
According to Sputnik International, the lavish reception provided for Russian delegation by President Trump signals high expectations for possible positive talks and outcomes.
According to the Director of the International Institute of Contemporary States, Alexey Martynov who spoke to the Russian news outlets, the format and protocol of the Russian delegation’s reception in Alaska highlight Trump’s special regard for his Russian guests.
“Trump, an experienced businessman, knows how to impress, and the level of attention given to the Russian delegation stands out. No political guests have received such treatment during the past six months of his presidency. This sends a clear message: these are his main guests, and he has high hopes for the upcoming talks”.
He suggested that the lavish reception, with its carefully orchestrated details, signals that “things could go back to the way they were,” drawing historical parallels to the 1973 meeting between Leonid Brezhnev and Richard Nixon.
Other experts also spoke about the scenarios.
Argentine specialist in international relations, Alejandro Laurnagaray, describes the meeting as a ‘Conflict resolution pathway’
“When two great powers sit down at the negotiating table, direct conflicts affecting both parties’ interests are resolved. The meeting between the presidents of Russia and the US is a positive development that paves the way for a possible restart and strengthening of their international relations, as well as easing of tensions.”
A historian and international relations analyst:
César Vidal described the meeting as ‘Redrawing global security architecture’ saying, “These talks in Alaska could be an excellent opportunity to define the contours of the security architecture, much as was done at the major conferences at the end of World War II. Above all, they could greatly contribute to achieving peace.”
Jadea Karan, journalist and analyst said it was a ‘Pivotal moment after Western defeat’
“The West suffered a strategic defeat in Ukraine after sabotaging the Minsk Accords… Trump is interested in economic cooperation. He threatened countries that cooperate with Russia… If Trump is truly seeking a solution, this summit is crucial.”
Turkish historian and political scientist, Mehmet Perinçek said the meeting is a ‘Defiance of saboteurs and Europe’s irrelevance’ “The very fact that such a meeting is taking place is significant. Globalists and militarists… never wanted America and Russia to compromise… Notably, Europe was completely excluded… This signals that Europe will gradually disappear as a pole in the near future.”
