The Gombe State Government has restated its strong commitment to providing reliable electricity for rural areas with the official launch of a major energy project at the Balanga Dam.
The 620KVA Small Hydropower-Solar Hybrid Project, described as the first of its kind in Nigeria, will provide clean and steady electricity to communities in Balanga Local Government and other nearby areas.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Hon. Sanusi Ahmad Pindiga, made this known during the project launch in Talasse.
He explained that the project will combine 320KVA of small hydropower with 300KVA of solar power to solve electricity problems in hard to reach areas.
He thanked Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for his full support and timely release of the 30% counterpart funding, which made the project possible.
“This project brings hope and opportunity to our rural people. It shows how serious the Governor is in bringing development to all corners of the state through clean and sustainable energy,” the Commissioner said.
Hon. Pindiga added that the project, once completed, will boost job creation, agro-processing, food production, revenue generation, and power supply for homes, schools, health centers, and small businesses.
He further noted that the Balanga Dam, which was not used to its full potential in the past, is now being revived under the directive of Governor Yahaya, to support both power and agricultural production.
The project is part of Governor Yahaya’s energy plan which includes the creation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Gombe State Rural Electrification Master Plan, and other renewable energy partnerships.
With similar rural electrification projects happening across the 11 local governments, the state government has assured residents of better days ahead, especially for those who have suffered from poor electricity supply for years.
