Balanga Dam To Shine As Gombe Begins Solar-Hydro Power Project

The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has officially launched the start of a 620KW hydropower-solar hybrid project at Balanga Dam, aimed at bringing clean, steady electricity to rural communities in the area.
The Governor, represented by his deputy, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, said the project marks a big step toward energy security, job creation, and industrial growth in the state.
He noted that the project supports his government’s vision of self-reliance, rural development, and sustainability.
“Power is the backbone of development. This project will change lives, support farming, create jobs and improve living standards in Balanga and beyond,” he said.
The project, which combines hydropower and solar energy, is the first of its kind in Nigeria, and is supported by the European Union (EU), Global Environment Facility (GEF), Federal Government, and Rural Electrification Agency (REA). It is being implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
REA Managing Director, Dr. Abba Aliyu, said the solar part will begin in two weeks and finish in a month. UNIDO’s hydropower section is expected to be completed by January 2026.
He praised Gombe State for qualifying to benefit from the Federal Government’s $750 million rural electrification program, and thanked Governor Inuwa Yahaya for always providing the needed counterpart funding.
UNIDO’s Regional Director, Amb. Philbert Johnson, said the hybrid system will boost agriculture and trade, making Gombe a leader in clean energy use in Nigeria.
In his remarks, GEF’s representative commended the governor’s strong commitment to renewable energy and good governance, while Commissioners Saidu Fawu and Sanusi Ahmed Pindiga called the project a model of what teamwork between governments and development partners can achieve.
Also, the Bala Waja of Waja Chiefdom, HRH Mohammed Danjuma Mohammed, called the launch “historic” and gave his full support to protect the facility.
The chief later gave Dr. Aliyu the traditional title of Wakilin Hasken Waja (Ambassador of Light for Waja).
The Balanga LGA Chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Salisu, and Assembly Member Hon. Musa Buba, also thanked the governor for his continuous support and vision.
Governor Yahaya used the event to call on the community to protect and manage the project well, reminding them that they are the direct beneficiaries of this development.
“Use this project wisely, protect it, and let it improve your lives economically, socially and educationally,” he advised.
